To my loss, Jeff was a classmate whom, like so many others, I did not know well. What I did know was that he was unfailingly kind and pleasant. He and I were in Jepson's physics class. Jepson often said, "If you are smiling, you are not learning." Jeff and I smiled and laughed a lot in his class. V = I/R, or some such; nature loves a vacuum; gravity attracts; cheese binds.
I, like Gary, remember Jeff as such a kind person. Knew him best at Wooddale where he was nice to to everyone. He was also a terrific "distance" runner at Wooddale, way out in front in the 600 fitness test and I wished he would have joined the track team.
Jeff was our excellent centerman in Edina serior league hockey. Playing between me and Jim Burton, Jeff was the gutsiest guy around. He was always in the corners mucking for pucks. He surely made Burton and I look good.
Jeff and I were friends since 9th or 10th grade. We participated in Edina Senior Hockey along with Jim Britton, Bob Steffes, Mike Bing and many others. Jeff and I decided to attend St. Cloud State after high school and much to our surprise, so did about another 50 other Edina Class of "66 grads! We enoyed playing Edina Leaque Softball for a good many years, duck and goose hunting and ice fishing on Lake of the Woods and many years of good times with friends and families. I am glad I was able to see Jeff during his final days in the hospital and was able to let him know he was my best friend and was loved.
Jim, thanks for sharing your comments about Jeff Carleton. He was a great guy! I had the good fortune to play on a hockey team where the three of us played on the same line. I have wonderful memories of that experience!
