Nick was a good friend of mine since high school. We roomed together in a dorm at UMD freshman year and part of sophomore year. Nick earned a degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota. He married Paula and they had twin boys. We lost touch after college for many years but eventually talked a few times up to the time Nick retired. He and Paula lived in Tucson where I believe Nick worked at the Bureau of Geology in ground water management. Nick died suddenly at age 60. Too soon.
Norwood B. Melcher, Jr. (Nick) August 23, 1948 - April 9, 2009 Nick recently retired from the U.S. Geological Survey. He served as District Chief of Iowa and Arizona for over 20 years. Nick had many interests including bicycling, skiing, hiking, photography, astronomy and traveling the world. He is survived by his wife, Paula, who he was married to for 37 years and twin sons, Henry and Clifton. He also has four grandchildren which he adored. Nick's family was very important to him. He will be truly missed. A gathering of friends will take place with a sharing of memories at Reid Park, Friday, April 17, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. at Ramada 3 next to the rose garden. He will be buried in Ely, MN, a place he always loved. We love you Nick, you will never be forgotten.
